As we journey together through these holiest of days, Bishop Anna shares reflections. Today she shares a Good Friday reflection.
Good Friday. Good Friday is the day when we see the violence of the world for what it is, when it feels like the empire and its soldiers have won. The Son of Man himself is on a cross, suffering and dying, and we are part of what brought us to this day.
Those of us who didn't flee into the night last night, found ourselves in the mob shouting, "Crucify him! Crucify him!" For when we don't find that hero who's gonna swoop in and fix everything for us, we so often turn to scapegoats, to shame, to blame, to abnegation of responsibility. And amidst all this, Christ calls out to God on our behalf, saying, "Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing."
Good Friday 2026, we must admit that we do not know what we are doing. Wars are being waged. Homeless people are on our streets. Too many people are going hungry. It is so senseless in so many ways. We clearly do not know what we are doing. We clearly need to be forgiven. And so, my friends, this Good Friday may you be broken open: heart, body, mind, and soul. For only what is broken can be made whole.
May God be with you this Good Friday. May God forgive us, for we do not know what we are doing.
