You're invited to St. George's to learn about the work of the Canadian not-for-profit organization, PeaceGeeks, and their support of displaced persons.

Eric Hansen from PeaceGeeks writes:

"More than 100 million people around the world are displaced from their homes. I suspect these refugees and immigrants want to feel the way I do as I write this, and the way I hope you feel as you read it: safe and secure in a place I call home.

PeaceGeeks is a Canadian based charity that builds websites and mobile apps to help displaced people find safety and essential resources in countries around the world. One of our free tools, WelcomeCoach.ca, is funded entirely by supporters and donors. It has helped hundreds of thousands of newcomers to Canada settle sooner, so they can thrive, build their homes, and strengthen our communities.

Our technology serves refugees and immigrants directly, and it also helps volunteers and other nonprofits reach more people through affordable digital tools, websites and niche phone apps, technology tools for effective help.

Most nonprofits still rely heavily on paper, yet most refugees and immigrants have smartphones. We help bridge that gap. We started as a grassroots organization a decade ago and have since been recognized and supported by the United Nations, Accenture and governments but we need to grow our grassroots support from individuals to keep our work going."

On Wonderful Wednesday, November 4, we'll explore questions like:

  • Can artificial intelligence be used ethically?
  • How is PeaceGeeks helping more health care workers get into jobs in British Columbia?
  • How are programs like our Skilled Newcoomers and Professionals Partnership (SNAPP) mentoring helping strengthen the Canadian economy during a trade war and as our population ages?
