*Coffee Time via Zoom is now on Wednesday mornings – Join us on Wednesday, October 28th at 10:30 am for Coffee Time in your home via Zoom. The Wednesday morning coffee times include some social time to start and then a discussion time. To take part, use the link which will be sent out several days ahead and on Wednesday morning. If you have questions, please e-mail Barb Prescott ([email protected]). Hope to see you there.
**Who are your saints? Who has been a saint to you? – As in some years past, we will be compiling a book of our saints to honour on All Saints Day and through the month of November, beginning next Sunday. Please e-mail the office ([email protected]) or phone 250-477-6741 to provide the names of people you regard as saints. At this time, we will be honouring those no longer with us. So please don’t send names of those you consider to be saints presently living among us.
Sidespersons (aka greeters or minister of hospitality) are needed to help at the 10:00 am service. Important duties during this time are greeting people warmly as they enter the church, welcoming newcomers, making sure that everyone is listed on the sign in sheet, directing attendees to their seats, and guiding people going up for communion. If you are interested in helping in this important ministry, please leave your name with Bonnie in the office by phoning 250-477-6741 or e-mailing ([email protected]). We plan to set up a roster so that sidespeople serve one Sunday per month.
The Diocesan Post will not be sent by mail this fall. The October issue is available to read online at the link sent by e-mail or from the News page of St. Luke’s website. If you would like a paper copy of the Diocesan Post, some are available in the church and from the church office.
Order Your Anniversary T-Shirt Now – Heather Simpson is taking orders for our anniversary t-shirts with the wonderful, colourful design chosen through the T-Shirt Design Contest earlier this year. The t-shirt will be available in sizes S-3XL. The cost will be $20 each. To order a t-shirt, please call (250-477-6741) or e-mail ([email protected]) St. Luke's Office and Bonnie will pass your message on to Heather. See the design and more information at the News page of St. Luke’s website.
Donations for the Shelbourne Community Kitchen – In other years after Thanksgiving, we would donate the vegetables and fruit collected to decorate the church to the Shelbourne Community Kitchen. However, this year is different because of COVID and because the Kitchen will be moving this fall. So what they really need at this time if monetary donations. Please consider if you are able to make a monetary donation to the Kitchen at this time, either by sending a cheque directly to the Shelbourne Community Kitchen (3541 Shelbourne St., Victoria, BC V8P 4G6 or via the Canada Helps link at the Kitchen’s website) or writing a cheque to St. Luke’s or putting cash in your envelope and noting on your envelope that your donation is for the Shelbourne Community Kitchen. We will collect the monetary donations for the Kitchen received to the end of October and will send a cheque to the Kitchen then.
For Sale – Queen size hand sewn quilted bedspread made by the Mennonites near Waterloo, Ont. Log Cabin design. Like new, rarely used. Would make a wonderful Christmas Gift. $400. To find out more about the quilt, contact Vicki Sharp. Please call (250-477-6741) or e-mail ([email protected]) St. Luke's Office and Bonnie will pass your message on to Vicki Sharp.
An Update from Our Place – Winter has arrived! Donations of sleeping bags and blankets and warm coats and boots, toques and socks, especially men’s items, are greatly needed. With fewer shelter spaces available because of COVID space restrictions, the number of people forced to shelter outside has increased dramatically this year. Many people we see are facing lack of shelter for the first time, particularly older adults. All are vulnerable in cold, wet and inclement weather. Donations may be dropped off at 919 Pandora in Victoria from 6:30am-9:00pm, seven days a week. Visit the Our Place website or the News page of St. Luke’s website for more information.
**Don’t Forget to Submit Your Tax Return – The Federal Government is making a public plea for seniors to submit their tax returns as soon as possible so their payments of the guaranteed income supplement aren’t suspended as of January 1, 2021. The Federal Government says tens of thousands of seniors are at risk of losing benefits because they haven’t yet filed their taxes. Because they don’t owe any taxes, many seniors don’t file tax returns and risk missing out on payments such as the guaranteed income supplement.
Thrifty Foods Smile Cards – Thank you to everyone who has been using their Smile Cards. This year’s Thrifty’s Smile Card Fundraiser Program has now started and we have received our third payment of $190.00, bringing our total to date to $473.75. This year the money will go towards repairing some of our rock walls. If you don’t yet have a Smile Card, please call the office and we will arrange to get one to you.
Gardening Help Needed – Gordon Dawson has retired from his work caring for the Memorial Garden. Thank you, Gordon, for your three years of work on this garden! Your work is greatly appreciated. Is there someone else could take on looking after this area? If so, please contact Barb Prescott through the Church Office or by e-mail ([email protected]). Gordon would be happy to meet with the new gardener to “show you the ropes.”
