She was stricken with an aneurysm a nd died on August 13\, 1990\, at the age of 32 years. Karren contributed s ignificantly to the life of the congregation\, especially in areas of pari sh education\, congregational programming\, youth work\, and Evangelical L utheran Women’s ministry. She also served on committees at the conferenc e\, Synodical\, and national levels of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada. Karren resigned this position after six years to attend the Univer sity of Victoria to pursue a degree in social work\, with the goal of full -time church service.\nThe purpose of this Bursary Fund is to give financi al assistance to Lutherans and Anglicans based in Western Canada who are c urrently involved in post-secondary education leading to a vocation of ser vice. The first Bursary was awarded in 1991.\nWe now invite applications f or a bursary of $1\,500. The deadline is April 30\, 2026.\nPersons who wis h to be considered by the Bursary Committee must meet the following criter ia:\n\nBe actively enrolled in full-time or part-time post-secondary studi es\;\nBe a Canadian citizen or have Permanent Resident Status with a Socia l Insurance Number (SIN) to be provided in the application letter (see bel ow). The SIN number is required by the Canada Revenue Agency for income ta x purposes.\nHave a permanent address in Western Canada (Manitoba\, Saskat chewan\, Alberta\, British Columbia\, and the Yukon).\nBe an active member of a Lutheran or Anglican congregation.\n\nTo apply for the 2026 Karren S tinson Bursary\, please follow these instructions carefully:\n\nSend a sig ned e-mail to lutheranchurchofthecross@shaw.ca no later than 30 April 2026 \, with “Application for Karren Stinson Bursary Award 2026” in the sub ject line.\nAttach an application letter to the e-mail that is addressed t o the Bursary Committee and provides a clear rationale for why you believe you would be a worthy recipient of the Bursary.\nIn 2 pages or less\, bri efly describe the following:\n\nyour current situation\, including your fi nancial need\;\nacademic achievements\;\nChristian activities\;\nparticipa tion in community and church related activities\; and\npreparation for a c areer in the field of social services\, education\, ordained ministry\, or a related church vocation.\n\n\nArrange for two official letters of recom mendation. One must be from a member of the clergy\; the other one must be from a teacher or an employer.
