St. Luke's Financial Outreach Committee meets about six times a year and reports to Parish Council. The committee's mandate, generally, is to support local charities with one-time donations.
In 2009, St. Luke’s Financial Outreach Committee distributed cheques to each of eight charities within the Greater Victoria area:
The Threshold Housing Society,
Victoria Women's Transition House,
Victoria Cool Aid Society,
Literacy Victoria,
Habitat for Humanity,
Artemis Place,
Bridges for Women Society,
and the Creating Homefulness Society.
In addition, a contribution was made to the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival for Sacred Music Awards and support was provided for the ongoing ministries of The Sisters of St. John the Divine and the University of Victoria Chaplaincy.
Donations were made to St. George the Martyr Anglican Church to support their contribution to the Rainbow Kitchen at St. Saviour's Church and to St. Luke's Women's Fellowship for their shoebox project for StreetHope.
New this year was our participation in the St. Nicholas Day Project, in aid of children at risk overseas. As in the story of St. Nicholas, gold coins (loonies and toonies) were dropped in a Christmas stocking hung in the Narthex from St. Nicholas Day to Epiphany. St. Luke’s parishioners contributed enough to send a cheque to World Vision to free two child soldiers and three sexually exploited children.
As well, parishioners donate foodstuffs weekly for delivery to the Mustard Seed and are presently involved in the Regional “Grains” program in support of the meal program at Our Place. For 2009, St. Luke’s donated barley, rice, macaroni, lentils, split peas, raisins and currants, white beans, brown rice, cornmeal, oatmeal, couscous, spices and dried fruit totalling 557.5 pounds! See also 2010 “Grains” List.
For the third year in a row and continuing, the rent charged to the South Island Centre for Counselling and Training (formerly Island Pastoral Services Association - IPSA) for the use of the rectory has been reduced by 50%. This is part of our mandate to community service.
Parishioners also contribute directly to the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund, which is the official relief and development agency of the Anglican Church of Canada.
Thanks to our parishioners who are truly compassionate and generous in their contributions.
